Responsibility for being a good steward of this precious ecosystem is a mandate. The lighthouse is located within a Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA). The Authority having Jurisdiction is NOAA. Fortunately new construction will not be a factor and no contact with the ocean floor is planned as part of restoration. Being a good steward means we leave it better than we find it. As part of our committment as a good steward we are creating Strategic Alliances with great environmental advocates such as Mote Marine Laboratories and the College of the Florida Keys Marine diversity program in a concerted effort to preserve as well as improve and monitor this pristine ecosystem. We will be utilizing new and advanced technology to monitor coral beds and document marine diversity within the 23 finger reefs that exist as canyons of incredible species diversity.
